 The Centre for IPR Studies established in the School of Legal Studies of the Cochin University of Science & Technology in 2003 is converted into an Inter University Centre in 2009 to encourage multidisciplinary teaching and research in the area of intellectual property rights. This is an autonomous Centre at CUSAT established by the Government of Kerala envisaged to be a research hub and resource centre facilitating interaction between researchers from different universities in Kerala and outside. This is one of the Inter University Centers conceived and implemented by the Department of Education, Government of Kerala.

Centre for IPR Studies was originally established with Dr. K.N. Chandrasekharan Pillai,  Dean, Faculty of Law as the Director and Dr. N.S. Gopalakrishnan as the Coordinator. The Centre is also supported by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, which has already established a Chair on Intellectual Property Rights in CUSAT in 2003. The Government of India also extended its financial support to develop a depository of Intellectual Property Rights materials. At present the Centre has one of the best collections on Intellectual Property Rights from different parts of the world.

It is the endeavour of the Centre to undertake inter disciplinary research and provide necessary help to the State and Central Governments in formulating their policies in the area of IPR. It is also envisaged to raise a band of scholars in this field by way of imparting training to the needy. The Centre has undertaken several research projects and studies to help various departments of Government of India in formulating the intellectual property policy and Law. In addition to this, the Centre also assists various departments with research support, to change the existing laws. Research support is also extended in various international negotiations on IP laws.

The Centre is offering multi-disciplinary Ph.D Programme with scholarships in IPR related areas to encourage researchers from different disciplines like law, economics, political science, history, science and technology etc. to undertake policy research. There are several research scholars working in different areas. The availability of primary research materials in the depository makes it possible for the researchers to bring out mimeographs on vital topics in the area of Intellectual Property Rights. The Centre is also involved in many seminars and awareness programmes for the scientists and postgraduate students in science. Members of the Centre are regularly involved in delivering lectures on Intellectual Property Rights on seminars, refresher courses etc., organized for science teachers and scholars in and outside the University.

The Centre has started One Year LLM Degree programme during the academic year 2016-2017 having a strength of 15 students.

As part of its extension activities the Centre will, in future, offer short term courses for postgraduate science students and middle level functionaries in the administration of justice. The Centre is also offering limited free service to the needy to acquire various intellectual property rights by way of filing patent, copyright, trademark, design etc. The Centre is also having an  Intellectual Property Rights facilitation cell to undertake this work on a regular basis.
